In Rape Case Of 4-Year-Old Girl, 50 Detained

Two days after a four-year-old girl was brutally raped, physically assaulted, and left to die in northwest Delhi’s Keshav Puram, the Delhi Police are yet to make any headway in the case. At least 50 people, including neighbours, have been picked up for questioning.

The girl was probably attacked with a sharp weapon as there were about 20 cuts on her face and body, said police.

Five teams have been constituted under Vijay Singh, deputy commissioner of police (northwest), to probe the case. The girl’s grandfather told HT that a suspect has been detained by the police. The DCP, however, refused to share details of the probe.

“Our teams are working on the case and all possible leads are being probed. As our probe is in preliminary stages, sharing details might hamper the case,” said Singh.”

Police sources said investigators also suspect the involvement of somebody related to the victim’s family.

“Since the girl was lured to an abandoned building, there is a strong possibility that the suspect was known to her. Though we are not sure, we are working on this lead for a breakthrough in the case,” said an investigating officer.

“People who have been picked up for questioning are being asked to provide details about their whereabouts during the period when the girl went missing and was raped. The family suspects some people whose roles are being probed. We are also examining footage of CCTV cameras installed in the locality,” the officer said.

Till now, the four-year girl has undergone two procedures at Safdarjung hospital. On Saturday, she underwent a colostomy — a procedure to create an alternative channel for the release of faeces from the body — and on Sunday a debridement — a procedure to remove dead or damaged tissues.

“She is stable now,” said Dr AK Rai, medical superintendent of the Safdarjung Hospital.
