3 children are among 15 killed when a van returning from a karate contest smashes head on with a bus in Mexico

A head-on collision between a bus and a van in southwestern Mexico left at least 15 dead, including 3 children, Mexican authorities said.

The accident occurred on Saturday night in the state of Oaxaca on Mexico’s Pacific coast when a van carrying passengers returning from a karate competition collided with a bus.
The bus driver was also killed in the collision.

Local police official Faustino Lopez Rios said: ‘We have a report that at least 15 people were killed and many more have been taken to hospital.’

The Mexican Red Cross tweeted that more than 30 people had been hurt.
The crash comes weeks after at least 24 people were killed and 10 injured when a bus collided with a car in central Mexico, sparking a deadly inferno.

Victims were found in the charred vehicles after the fiery crash near the town of Jalpan in the central state of Puebla last month.
An official in the Puebla state prosecutor’s office said 22 bodies were recovered from the bus and two from the car.
‘The bus was full. Only 10 people managed to escape through the windows because the door was blocked by the other vehicle,’ the official said.
