A 65-year-old man committed suicide at Mustafabad in northeast Delhi on Tuesday morning after his son was arrested for molesting a woman in the neighbourhood. Mohammad Ayyub visited a mosque in the morning, returned to his room on the first floor of his house and allegedly hanged himself using a cloth. His family members said he was depressed since the arrest of his son. Mohammad Ayyub, lived with his wife, daughter and a 19-year-old son at Mustafabad. According to his family members, the youth was arrested last month after he allegedly molested a woman in the area during an argument. He was produced before a court and sent to a 14 day police custody. However, Ayyub said his son was being framed and had approached the court, but his pleas were rejected.
His wife told police that on Monday night he had locked himself up in a room after having an argument with another neighbour who accused him of the ending his son. This depressed him and even though his family tried to convince him that his son would be released on Wednesday, but he refused to accept it.
On Tuesday morning, Ayyub visited a mosque for prayer and came back early. He made a noose and hanged himself from the ceiling fan. The family members discovered the body an hour later when they went looking for him in his room.
They raised an alarm and immediately informed police. The body was rushed to a local hospital where Ayyub was declared dead on arrival. Police said a probe has been initiated.
The family was living in the area for the past 20 years where Ayyub used to run a grocery store.
